EVIDENCE, ETHICS AND RELATIONSHIP TRENDS IN MENTAL HEALTH SUPERVISION

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This seminar focuses on the mandates and trends in clinical, legal, administrative, and management aspects of mental health supervision. The focus is on the supervisor's role in management of services provided by agency practitioners and private practitioners. Traditional effective supervisory practices are reviewed as well as new and emerging generally accepted supervisory practice standards in an increasingly complex practice world. There will be specific focus on requirements for supervision for licensure. The training will also contain information about the changing role of clinical supervisors in the mental health field under the new federal health care law.



Presenter(s)

Dr. Carlton E. Munson is a professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work and Director of the Washington Area Supervision Institute at Woodstock Forest. He has published 7 books and 78 journal articles and book chapters. His books, Handbook of Clinical Social Work Supervision, The Mental Health Diagnostic Desk Reference: Visuals and More for Understanding the DSM-IV-TR, Social Work and Families, and Social Work Supervision, have been adopted as texts in the United States and abroad. Dr. Munson is the founding editor of the Clinical Supervisor, journal and has lectured throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He has been designated by the NASW Foundation as a Social Work Pioneer.

Personality Disorders & Trauma: The Connection and the Treatment

Attend this seminar and learn an approach to treating personality disorder diagnosed clients based on new insights in the fields of traumatology and neuroscience, including the importance of brain-to-brain attunement and limbic resonance. You will have a new understanding of the etiology of personality disorders.



Take home a comprehensive approach for safely managing and decreasing frightening symptoms, including violence, self-injury, suicidality and the emotional meltdowns of some of your most challenging clients. You will also learn strategies for assessing their traumatic histories without reactivating the trauma; how to sidestep the many potential clinical traps arising in this work; and how to help these clients develop a more differentiated sense of themselves.



Through her consultation and/or treatment work in the U.S. and Denmark in psychiatric hospitals, men’s and women’s prisons, child protection agencies, a domestic violence program, child guidance clinics, and developing a trauma treatment program for a large HMO, in addition to her private practice, Dr. Larson has had a broad exposure to a vast range of personality disorder diagnosed clients. Dr. Larson will provide you with a liberal exposure to clinical examples integrated with scientific information and practical, effective treatment strategies.



Presenter

Speaker:Noel R. Larson, MSW, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist, marriage and family therapist and independent clinical social worker. She maintains a private practice at Meta Resources, a clinic she co-founded with James Maddock in 1981.



Dr. Larson also provides supervision and consultation to groups throughout the country and conducts training workshops in the U.S. and abroad on personality disorders, family therapy, resilience, sexual abuse treatment, systemic treatment of domestic violence, group therapy, trauma and attachment and therapist differentiation.



Dr. Larson provides ongoing consultation with several health care, social service and corrections organizations in Minnesota and Colorado and has had an ongoing consultation and training practice in Denmark for thirty years. Noel taught for several years at the University of Minnesota Graduate School of Social Work before becoming director of the Family Sexual Abuse Treatment Program at the University of Minnesota Medical School. She also developed and implemented the first U.S. treatment program for incarcerated female sex offenders at the Shakopee women’s prison.



Dr. Larson is the coauthor of Incestuous Families: An Ecological Approach to Understanding and Treatment (Norton). As a consultant to a domestic violence treatment program, her and Dr. Maddock’s systemic model was featured on Oprah, as an alternative to the cognitive-behavioral anger-management model.
