Conference and Event Center (Bldg 2)

It is time for the health care disciplines and our general culture to integrate the facts of aging, dying, death and grief within a broad vision of what a healthy last chapter of life looks like. Stories of success – brilliant and effective programs of care or people expressing a sense of wellness in the midst of difficult circumstances – often challenge our assumptions and expand the realm of what we consider possible. Dr. Byock will explore the hopeful clinical, cultural and even political implications of affirmative visions for these difficult, but normal, times in human life.

Speaker: Ira Byock, MD is Director of Palliative Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire and a Professor at Dartmouth Medical School.

Dr. Byock has authored numerous articles on the ethics and practice of hospice, palliative and end-of-life care. His first book, Dying Well, (1997) has become a standard in the field. His most recent book, The Four Things That Matter Most, (2004) is used as a counseling tool widely by palliative care and hospice programs, as well as within pastoral care.

Dr. Byock has been a consistent advocate for the voice and rights of dying patients and their families. He has been the recipient of the National Hospice Organization’s Person of the Year (1995), the National Coalition of Cancer Survivorship’s Natalie Davis Spingarn Writers Award (2000), the American College of CHEST Physicians Roger Bone Memorial Lecture Award (2003) and the Outstanding Colleague Award (2008) of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.

He has been a featured guest on numerous national television and radio programs, including NPR: All Things Considered and Fresh Air, ABC Nightline, CBS 60 Minutes and PBS The News Hour.

Who should attend?

Sometimes, in life and work, being able to reframe or redefine a “problem” or “obstacle” as opportunity makes all the difference. But exactly how do you transform breakdown into new possibilities in the midst of fear and upset?

Join Tai Sophia Institute Co-Founders Dianne Connelly and Bob Duggan on October 1-2, 2011 for Redefining Health, Tai Sophia’s ground-breaking signature program. Based on ancient wisdom and anchored in the modern world, Redefining Health will empower you with more than 20 practical skills you can use immediately to redefine upset, fear, relationships, and ultimately your health and your life.

The skills you will learn during this workshop are powerful, effective, and broad-based. Executives use these skills in business meetings. Teachers use them in the classroom. Health-care providers use them with their patients. Parents, teens, and even young children use them with each other.
