"Funtastic" Adlerian Techniques for Change with Rob Guttenberg, LCPC
Participants in this
workshop will discover the power of jokes, metaphors, stories, songs and experiential exercises
for demonstrating Adlerian concepts to diverse populations in a variety
of settings. They will learn how to apply these motivational techniques in
parenting classes, play therapy, private practice, human relations training or
for personal growth in their own lives.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES. This workshop is designed to help you:
1. Learn over 20 techniques that incorporate Adlerian theory
to apply in your practice
2. Recognize the theory behind experiential learning, and the power
of using humor and metaphor to facilitate
change
3. Assess a child's goal of "mistaken misbehavior"
(attention, power, revenge or assumed helplessness)
4. Select specific corrective strategies that are
appropriately matched to the child's "mistaken misbehavior" goal.
Rob Guttenberg, LCPC, has over 30 years of experience as an
Adlerian child guidance specialist. The author of Fun'tastic Adlerian
Techniques for Change and The Parent as Cheerleader, he is the current Vice President for the Mid- Atlantic Adlerian Psychology Society.
He is a performing songwriter and has served for five years as a faculty
member of the International Committee of
Adlerian Summer Schools and Institutes.

An Introduction to
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with Jelena Kecmanovic, PhD
This workshop provides a general overview of ACT, considered
an •acceptance- and mindfulness-based" form of cognitive behavioral therapy.
After a brief review of ACT's efficacy, we will focus on ACT's theoretical
model, clinical processes, and techniques. Our discussion will cover the role
of both external and internal avoidance (of one's negative thoughts, emotions, and
bodily sensations) in psychopathology development and maintenance. The workshop
emphasizes ways to target it in therapy. We will use case studies to illustrate
ACT case conceptualization. Experiential exercises, including mindfulness, will
allow participants to practice some of the ACT skills.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES.This workshop is designed to help you:
1. Describe how ACT fits into the larger field of CBT
2. Describe ACT model and use it in case conceptualization
3. Develop and implement a treatment plan from the ACT
perspective
4. Practice and apply ACT skills, including mindfulness
Jelena Kecmanovic, PhD is an adjunct professor at George
Washington University's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and
has a private practice in Arlington, Virginia. She has special expertise in
acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, CBT and
DBT. She is action editor of the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology and has
presented extensively about ACT, depressive rumination, and post-traumatic
stress disorder.

Integrating
Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy into Your Practice with Patrice Alvarado, PhD
This experiential workshop will introduce participants to
the major concepts and practices of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT).
It will cover how and why these concepts and practices affect mental health
functioning and emotional well-being, with particular emphasis on the treatment
of depression and anxiety. Participants will learn ways to integrate
mindfulness principles into their work with clients as well as into their daily
life to enhance self-care.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES. This workshop is designed to help you:
1. Identify and describe the major concepts of mindfulness
and mindfulness-based psychotherapies, specifically MBCT
2. Describe the various mindfulness practices of MBCT and
explain the theoretical underpinnings of these practices.
3. Apply MBCT concepts in your work with clients.
4. Integrate mindfulness and MBCT practices into your daily
life.
Patrice Alvarado,PhD has a full-time private practice in
Manassas, VA. In addition to individual therapy, she provides mindfulness-based
cognitive therapy groups for adults, children and adolescents. Dr. Alvarado is
an adjunct professor at the American School of Professional Psychology at
Argosy University, where she served as an associate professor from 2000-2013.
She has presented extensively on mindfulness and cultural competence, and
provides workplace consultation on stress management, coping and communication
skills.
