Montgomery Hospice Presents:

To Life! Clinically and Culturally Reclaiming the End of Life with
Ira Byock, MD

Friday, September 16, 2011 11:15 am - 4:30 pm
The Universities at Shady Grove, Rockville, MD

It is time for the health care disciplines and our general culture to integrate the facts of aging, dying, death and grief within a broad vision of what a healthy last chapter of life looks like. Stories of success – brilliant and effective programs of care or people expressing a sense of wellness in the midst of difficult circumstances often challenge our assumptions and expand the realm of what we consider possible. Dr. Byock will explore the hopeful clinical, cultural and even political implications of affirmative visions for these difficult, but normal, times in human life.

Speaker:
Ira Byock, MD is Director of Palliative Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire and a Professor at Dartmouth Medical School. He has been involved in hospice and palliative care since 1978. Dr. Byock has authored numerous articles on the ethics and practice of hospice, palliative and end-of-life care. His first book, Dying Well, has become a standard in the field. His most recent book, The Four Things That Matter Most, is widely used as a counseling tool by palliative care and hospice programs, as well as within pastoral care.

Who should attend?
Nurses, Social Workers, Psychologists, Clergy, Bereavement Counselors, Funeral Directors, Volunteers and others interested in end-of-life topics.
