OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER:
A COGNITIVE BEHAVIOR APPROACH TO CONCEPTUALIZATION AND TREATMENT

Program Description:
This presentation reviews the diagnostic criteria and clinical presentations of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. As OCD can have a wide range of manifestations, it is important for clinicians to properly assess for the underlying themes so that an effective treatment can be developed. Successful treatment relies on effective interventions and creative clinicians. Interventions and treatments for clients with OCD involve cognitive behavioral strategies including hierarchy development and Exposure and Response Prevention. Also addressed will be the importance and rationale of the subjective units of distress scale (SUDS) as part of hierarchy development and E/RP.

Program Objectives

Participants will:


• Become familiar with symptoms of obsessive compulsive disorder
• Recognize the subtypes of OCD
• Conceptualize treatment issues related to obsessive compulsive disorder from a cognitive-behavioral perspective and
• Understand treatment interventions to utilize when working with OCD clients

Presenter

Dr. Elspeth Bell has been a staff clinician at the Behavior Therapy Center of Greater Washington since 2006. She works primarily with adolescents, adults, and families focusing on the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and other anxiety disorders, depression, and familial relationship difficulties. As the director of BTC’s growing Hoarding Program, Dr. Bell provides individual therapy
for hoarders, both office-based and in vivo, as well as psycho educational and support groups. Dr. Bell participates on Hoarding Task Forces in the DC area and provides professional trainings for numerous agencies. In addition to her clinical work at BTC, Dr. Bell coordinates the continuing education program and the BTC Quarterly.

While Dr. Bell grew up in the US Navy and lived in places like Turkey and Guam, Maryland was always “home base.” After graduating from Rockville High School, Dr. Bell received her Bachelor’s degree in psychology at Vassar College. She then moved from Poughkeepsie to the Bronx where she attended Fordham University for both her Master’s in psychology and Doctorate in clinical psychology. While studying in New York, Dr. Bell first began to pursue her interest in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and cognitive behavior therapy. After living in New York for several years, she returned to Maryland toc omplete her doctoral internship at the John L. Gildner Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents in Rockville, Maryland.
